On January 10, 2015 at 2:10 p.m., Pacific Coast Fruit Company had to say goodbye to a truly amazing individual.  His name was Emil Nemarnik and, for those who don’t know him, he was the owner and founder of this company. He was the most inspirational, humble, hard-working, and kind-hearted man to ever enter our lives.

Today we will take this opportunity to tell the story of Emil and shed some light onto what made him so incredible. Emil grew up in a small town in Italy called Nemarniki with twelve brothers and sisters during WWII. With the extreme poverty and corruption taking place, his parents decided to send one child to America and Emil, just ten years old at the time, was chosen. They put him on a boat and away he went—no money, no family, just a ten year old boy headed to a foreign land. He arrived in Ellis Island where he then traveled to Oregon to live with a distant uncle. One day, he came home from school and found his uncle dead from a heart attack. At only twelve years of age, Emil was all alone and living at a boy’s home. Emil immediately started working at a local grocery store as well as berry picking to pay his way through school. He put himself through University of Portland where he then met his future spouse and our co-founder, Kathleen Spada, and together they had five children.

He continued his career in the produce industry at a local company where he bought, sold, and brokered produce. In 1976, Emil was hit with another challenge when the company he was working for had sold, leaving him without a job. In this time of peril, Emil stood tall and strummed up the crazy idea to start his own produce company. Now at 50 years old, Emil and Kathleen mortgaged their house and found a bank that lent them the money to start what we know today to be Pacific Coast Fruit Company. What most do not know is that while all of this was happening, Emil was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Doctors told him that he would be immobile in a year and that his life expectancy had greatly decreased. Just like everything else in his life, Emil never let this get in the way of his dream.

In October of 1977, Pacific Coast Fruit Co. opened its doors as the smallest produce distributor in Portland with eight employees, four of which were family members. Since then, Pacific Coast Fruit Co. has grown into one of the largest independently owned produce distributors in the Pacific Northwest. This company has grown to now over 500 employees, all of which we consider family.

Up until the last days, Emil came to work. He never missed a day and never missed an opportunity to get to know all of his employees. He would always say that his job was no more important than the guy who just started yesterday. As the company grew, his ideals never changed and no one was just a number to him. He considered everyone to be family and stressed the importance of quality over quantity. Even since his passing, his philosophy still holds true today: “Take good care of your employees, customers, shippers, and farmers and they will make you successful.”

Four years ago today, Pacific Coast Fruit Company gained its own personal Guardian Angel looking out for all of us. Emil is with us everyday in every person who calls themselves a Pacific Coast Fruit Co. employee or customer. He sits next to us on the phones buying product. He rides with us on the pallet jacks receiving and picking orders. He takes shotgun in the trucks delivering product. He keeps us warm out in repack, splits, and prepared foods. He helps us always put the customer first when entering orders. He rides along with us when visiting our customers and potential customers. He is with our chefs in the kitchens creating amazing dishes with our produce. He is with the produce manager setting up a display in their store. When someone represents this company, they are a representation of him. We will never forget him, his message, and everything he gave us by starting Pacific Coast Fruit Company.

Rest In Peace Emil
