Have you ever wondered why so many spring vegetables have a purple hue to them this time of year? Vegetables like Purple Sprouting Broccoli and Cabbage Raab take on beautiful purple hues that are caused by anthocyanin developing in the cold winter months. Anthocyanin is a naturally occurring compound that is known to protect plants from sunlight as well as attracting pollinators. Mother Nature kicks in and helps plants transition through the spring months, creating a dynamic color that is attractive to bugs and people alike. Generally, this is more common in organic vegetables, because conventionally grown seeds have been bred to remove anthocyanin.

Right now, we have Conventional Purple Sprouting Broccoli from Blooming Junction and Organic PSB from Mustard Seed Farms, Cabbage Raabs from Ralph’s Greenhouse, as well as Organic Purple Daikon, new crop Purple Artichokes, Purple Kale, and Purple Potatoes, with Purple Asparagus coming later on!

What to cook with all this pretty purple spring produce? I recommend roasting, grilling, or frying to retain the color and sweetness as cooking with water can wash away most of the color. Sprouting Broccoli performs great on a grill, along with halved Artichokes and Potatoes. Cue some ribeyes or a couple of cauliflower steaks to pair along with a drizzle on a bright chimichurri sauce and you have a beautiful meal to enjoy with a glass of rose on the patio.

Hot & New

Purple Sprouting Broccoli

We have local PSB in organic and conventional varieties.

Cabbage Raab

More signs of spring, we have organic cabbage raab in, both red and green.

Long Stem Artichokes

First of the season’s long stem artichokes have arrived. The inside of the stems are similar to artichoke hearts. Great for grilling.

English Peas

USA grown English peas are in stock now.

Rhubarb

We have both organic and conventional local field grown rhubarb.

Living Butter Lettuces

We have two new living butter lettuce packs in from Inspired Greens including a 12 ct tender trio mix and a 10 ct juicy red. The trio mix is currently filled with red and green oak and a crispy variety (similar in taste to arugula).

Sweet Onions

Mexican Mayan sweet onions in stock.

Coming Soon

Corn

Fresh Californian white corn arriving mid next week.

Local Asparagus

Starting April 24.

Local Radishes

Local bunch radishes are two weeks out at this point.

Cherries

California cherries will be starting around May 1.

Steady

Green Almond

Green almonds are available for special order.

Quality & Shortage Issues

Avocados

Avocado shortages continue to be the norm, with Mexican fruit not crossing the border and California being very tight on supplies.

Organic Greens Including Kale

An issue we’re seeing in other items as well, a lot of our kale shipments are being rejected for insects, making this a very tight item for the next few days.

Celery

Celery is still tight as we’re in transition for both organic and conventional.

Kiwi

While we have Chilean new crop kiwi, it’s still very green.

Non-Dairy Milk

We’re seeing a shortage in our non-dairy milk at the moment.

Berries

Blackberries aren’t looking too good yet, and raspberries are super tight.

Out & Done for the Season

Elephant Garlic

Elephant garlic is done.

Sumo Mandarins

We’ve received our last shipment of Sumos. When we’re out, we’re out.
